Being breast-fed is a human right. Every child has the right to be fed with mother’s milk, every mother has the right to breast-feed her child.” These are basic principles of the WHO every mother-to-be, every father has to think about.
“Being breast-fed is a human right. Every child has the right to be fed with mother’s milk, every mother has the right to breast-feed her child.” These are basic principles of the WHO every mother-to-be, every father has to think about. Eva Herman pleads for a wonderful, positive and natural way of treating the secret of life. With her book, Eva Herman wants to help parents to decide how to live with their baby, how to feed it and what role it shall play in their life. She talked to scientists and practising physicians, breast-feeding advisers and midwives, mothers, fathers and children. The results of her research show clearly: children who are breast-fed and lovingly cared for develop openness, self-confidence and intelligence much better and easier than children who have not experienced such loving care. And it also showed that an intense contact between mother and child can be created without breast-feeding; the most important factors are intimate relationships and affectionate touching. According to surveys, breast-fed children are altogether more intelligent, their immune system works better, they suffer less from infections and more rarely have weight problems – positive effects that can still be stated in adulthood. It has been proved that the child’s joy has also repercussions on the breast-feeding mother: She suffers less often from breast cancer, has less problems with her uterus and ovaries and most of the time her figure becomes perfect again. There is no doubt about the effect on the psychic stability of both child and mother. Taking, feeding and being involved are the most important factors in a human being’s mental development. Therefore, numerous organisations like the UNICEF, the WHO, La Leche Liga and national breast-feeding committees have for a long time been calling on mothers to breast-feed.
